Jim had a series of four photographs in his Hawaii scrapbook of a "cracked up" Hawaiian Airlines DC-3 being salvaged.

High resolution scans of the above image show that this plane was 'Waialeale' - NC33608; one of the three DC-3's that made the crossing.

This was an unfortunate event in that this new DC-3 had only been on the islands a month. Waialeale ran off the end of the runway at the Lihue airport on Kauai while conducting single engine maneuver checks of Hawaiian Airline pilots prior to releasing the planes to the airline. The Douglas check pilot on board was Johnny Martin.

The report states that the plane was, by the insurance providers opinions, "a wreck" as far as future utility was concerned and was to be used for salvage only. This turned out not to be true.
